Barone Ricasoli Rocca Guicciarda Chianti classico Reserva 2005

Price: $21.55

Named for one of the feudal properties of the Ricasoli family, Rocca Guicciarda is a traditonal style Chianti Classico Riserva.

Production area: Brolio, Gaiole in Chianti

Heavy February snowfall produced a good water supply. Thanks to a warm, sunny spring, the first buds appeared on the younger vines in the middle of April and the Sangiovese flowered at the end of May. The various growing phases were accelerated by moderate rain and temperatures for most of summer. Sangiovese started to color on the vine, earlier than normal, towards the end of the July, but ripening of the fruit was delayed by rather low end of summer temperatures.

Blend: Sangiovese with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Fermentation temperature: 86° F
Maceration period: 16 days
Ageing: 20 months in barriques and 900-litre casks
Bottling: October 2007

Tasting notes:

The wine has a ruby-red color with violet highlights and aromas of blackberries, raspberries and violets. Rocca Guicciarda is full and generous on the palate and displays a velvety, broad and well-rounded body with textured tannins.

The Wine Enthusiast 90 Points

This wonderful ruby-colored Riserva delivers
notes of ripe cherry, milk chocolate, herbs
and pipe tobacco. It has loads of zest
and pizzazz, with lingering spice tones,
solid structure and silky tannins.
It presents a complete and very
pretty package. - M.L. (9/1/2008)

On the nose, it reveals notes of forest fruits (blueberries and blackberries) balanced with dark-toasted notes from the wood. Peninsula, a land of lonely oaks and ancient vineyards.Serving suggestions: Accompanies roasted meats, stews, Iberian charcuterie and cured cheeses. Serve at 63-65ºF.Press: Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - 87 Points - Deep red. Spicy red cherry, raspberry and smoky herb aromas complicated by earthy and floral nuances. Juicy, tight and refreshing, with gently sweet red fruit flavors and good tangy cut. The dry finish echoes with nervy red berry fruit.
